QTC's TV Buzz: James Franco, Lost, Idris Elba, new series "V", Greg Vaughan & MORE!

A new interview with actor Greg Vaughan

At the end of last month, word came down that Greg Vaughan’s days as Lucky Spencer [on the ABC soap General Hospital] had come to an end. The popular actor, who spent almost seven years in the coveted role of the son of soap’s and General Hospital’s most legendary couple, Luke and Laura, was given his walking papers. But with that came the news that GH brought back the original ‘cowboy’, Jonathan Jackson, to replace Vaughan in what has to be the year’s most highly anticipated, yet bittersweet, shocking soap switch! On-Air On-Soaps sat down with the reliable and hard working Vaughan late last week. In this personally heartfelt and revealing interview.

UPDATE: Greg Vaughan is returning to primetime on The CW's 90210. Greg starred in the show's previous incarnation, however, word is that he will not reprise the Cliff Yeager character he played in the original series 7th season. The handsome 36-year old actor, who also starred in Charmed for the old WB network (now The CW), has just began filming his episodes on 90210, so stay tuned.

James Franco: Can he help save daytime?

Given all this disturbing talk about pay cuts on The Young and the Restless and the rabid (though apparently, unsubstantiated) speculation about the future of One Life to Live, it’s always nice to hear some good news about the ailing genre: James Franco is finally in the house – or in the medical ward, rather. ABC has confirmed that Oct. 30 was Franco’s first day on General Hospital, a gig we’d like to think he agreed to because he wants to see daytime soaps survive just like the rest of us (though it might have simply occurred because he shares the same manager as GH’s Steve Burton). The Golden Globe-winning actor will play a mystery guy who comes to Port Charles and gets up in the grill of Jason Morgan (Burton). His role will play out over a two-month period that starts airing Nov. 20, but Franco’s only contracted to shoot three days on the sudser’s Los Angeles set. No matter: any kind of star-studded appearance from a celebrity like Franco should do wonders for the soap world. Or can it? Make no mistake, something has to be done to keep daytime dramas relevant.

Actress Maggie Grace (Shannon) brought back to 'Lost'

The dead character is reportedly revived in the sixth season as Maggie Grace makes her way to Hawaii. It looks like the last season of "Lost" will be one big reunion. TV Guide Magazine's William Keck has just reported that Maggie Grace aka Shannon Rutherford will be reporting to duty next month in Oahu, Hawaii where the show has been filming. The filming of her part reportedly will be "top-secret". Indeed, actor Ian Somerhalder has confirmed that his character will be back to life, as well. Similarly, Dominic Monaghan will reprise his role as Charlie Pace who was last seen drown in a flooded bunker.

NBC developing legal drama with actor Idris Elba

NBC is planning a new legal drama with actor Idris Elba (The Office, The Wire). Following his seven-episode arc on "The Office," Elba has teamed with "Battlestar Galactica" and "Caprica" executive producer David Eick to executive produce a drama project for the network. Written by feature scribes Sean O'Keefe and Will Staples, the untitled project is a hard-hitting legal drama about a vigilante lawyer who uses any means necessary to defend his clients against a corrupt district attorney and city establishment.

Rumer Willis’ new lesbian romance on 90210

Things are heating up this winter for Rumer Willis on 90210. Her character, Gia, is going to get a girlfriend in January. “This isn’t a fling,” 90210’s executive producer Rebecca Sinclair tells Entertainment Weekly. “We’re coming at this [relationship] from a genuine place and not going, ‘Let’s do a titillating story that will grab some promotion.’ This is a real aspect of teenager life that’s interesting … And there’s been a real void in the 90210 universe in terms of gay and bisexual characters.”

37 most appalling TV shows ever

The once videogame-centric cable network gave us Hurl!, where contestants would gorge on potpies and clam chowder (and, we assume, some non-delicious items), then get strapped into spinning games by appropriately shielded professionals. Whoever blows chunks last, wins. Score! So much cheaper than a day pass to an amusement park, and without those pesky elements of fresh air and other people. It also marked a new low in EW.com's ever-competitive collection of the most appalling TV shows ever. If you can make it to the bottom rung of the following shame spiral, you win, too!

Exciting new sci-fi series 'V' premieres Tuesday, Nov. 3rd

The new series stars Morena Baccarin (from the sci-fi cult hit, Firefly) as Anna, the enigmatic leader of aliens calling themselves the Visitors (or "Vs" for short), who hover gigantic spaceships over every major city in the world. Anna then appears and offers a message of peace and advanced technology, just as long as the Vs get the slavish devotion of every human being on Earth. Scott Wolf plays ambitious news anchor Chad Decker, who lands an exclusive interview with Anna, only to discover he's expected to play ball and make the Vs look good. Also starring are Elizabeth Mitchell ( "Lost") as an FBI counterterrorism agent; Logan Huffman as her teenage son, Joel Gretsch ("The 4400") as a worried priest and Morris Chestnut ("Boyz N the Hood") as a man with a secret who faces a life-altering decision.

Say goodbye to NBC as we know it

Shhhh… listen carefully. The noise you hear is not the thundering hoof beats of the great horse Silver, carrying a white-hatted Jay Leno to the rescue of NBC. Instead, that rumbling sound is the roiling seeds of discontent germinating in the executive suites of NBC affiliates around the country — the first, quiet footsteps of a potential revolt. And if it goes unchecked, by next summer we could see the end of NBC as we’ve known it for the last five decades. Instead, I think we’re seeing the first signs of a radical shrinking of NBC as a broadcast network. A smaller NBC, with more modest aspirations, can focus on franchise hits rather than seven-days-a-week programming — and be just as successful as its corporate cousins USA and Bravo. Or The CW.

  • Box Office Report: "Michael Jackson's This Is It" earns over $100 million worldwide!

"Michael Jackson's This Is It" pulled in $101 million worldwide in its first five days, and distributor Sony is extending the farewell performance film beyond its planned two-week run.

    AP reports:
"Michael Jackson's This Is It" was the No. 1 Halloween thriller domestically with a $21.3 million opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. The previous weekend's No. 1 movie, Paramount's low-budget horror sensation "Paranormal Activity," slipped to No. 2 with $16.5 million, lifting its total to $84.8 million. While "Paranormal Activity" led Halloween's scary movies, an established horror franchise lost its fear factor as Lionsgate's "Saw VI" fell sharply in its second weekend after an anemic debut. "Saw VI" came in at No. 5 this weekend with $5.6 million, raising its total to just $22.8 million after 10 days. Previous sequels in the serial-killer series all had topped $30 million during opening weekend alone.
    Weekend Box Office:
    1. "Michael Jackson's This Is It," $21.3 million.
    2. "Paranormal Activity," $16.5 million.
    3. "Law Abiding Citizen," $7.3 million.
    4. "Couples Retreat," $6.1 million.
    5. "Saw VI," $5.6 million.
    6. "Where the Wild Things Are," $5.1 million.
    7. "The Stepfather," $3.4 million.
    8. "Astro Boy," $3.04 million.
    9. "Amelia," $3 million.
    10. "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant," $2.8 million.

For gay and straight men, gauging facial attraction appears to operate similarly

The pictures above are examples of masculinized (right) and feminized (left) versions of a male face. A new study from a researcher at Harvard University finds that gay men are most attracted to the most masculine-faced men, while straight men prefer the most feminine-faced women.

    Physorg reports:
The findings suggest that regardless of sexual orientation, men’s brains are wired for attraction to sexually dimorphic faces — those with facial features that are most synonymous with gender.

The study is the first to examine the facial feature preferences of gay men and lesbian women. In this particular study, straight women preferred more masculine-faced men than lesbian women, while lesbians preferred slightly more masculine female faces than straight women or men.

Sexually dimorphic features in male faces include a broad jaw, broad forehead, and more pronounced brow ridge. A sexually dimorphic female face has a more tapered chin, larger lips, and a narrower forehead.

Although it is difficult to make substantial evolutionary claims from this study, the study supports the idea that male attraction operates differently from female attraction, regardless of sexual orientation. READ MORE

Elton John seriously ill; American concert dates have been cancelled

British media are reporting that Elton John checked into a hospital in London but his Canadian partner, David Furnish, is telling reporters that Elton is "fine". Obviously, David is putting on a brave face and Elton is very sick and in need of prayers. At Elton John's age, influenza can kill you. I hope he gets well, very soon.

    CBC reports:
Singer Elton John has postponed several more concert dates, putting off three performances with Billy Joel in the United States in November. John recently put on hold the final dates of his Red Piano tour in Britain and Ireland. A posting on his website over the weekend said promoters were "informed by management that Elton has been advised by his doctor to postpone these performances due to a serious case of E. coli bacterial infection and influenza." That means his concerts with Joel in Seattle on Nov. 4 and 7 and another in Portland, Ore., on Nov. 10 are postponed. READ MORE

Andre Agassi: 'My dad gave me speed'

Andre Agassi says in an excerpt from his soon-to-be-released autobiography, "Open", that he swallowed a pill given to him by his father — apparently when he was a junior player — that he believes could have been the illegal drug known as "speed."

    CBC reports:
In the latest passage revealed from the book Open, which was published Thursday in the German newspaper Bild, the eight-time Grand Slam champion says his father gave him an unidentified little white pill and he took it. "I swallow it and I feel good. Not much different. A bit more alert," Agassi wrote in comments translated from German, adding his brother Phillip had warned him against taking anything from their father because it was the amphetamine speed. "Next time you go to the nationals and Paps gives you pills, don't take them," Agassi quotes his brother as saying. "As Philly predicted, at the national tournament in Chicago, my father gave me a pill," Agassi says.

It is unclear to which tournament Agassi is referring. But he did win the 1985 national boys 16 doubles championship title with John Falbo in Kalamazoo, Mich., about 150 kilometres from Chicago, when he was 15. READ MORE

First official look at Bradley Cooper's "The A-Team"

Fans of "The A-Team" don't have to wait much longer for a real look at the new do-gooder mercenaries with the release of the film's first official photo. Standing in front of the mist and armed with guns are Bradley Cooper as Lt. Templeton "Faceman" Peck, Quinton Jackson as B.A. Baracus, Sharlto Copley as H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdoch and Liam Neeson as Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith. "The A-Team" is a big screen adaptation to the popular '80s NBC series of the same name. The original idea of the TV series is used for the movie version, meaning the story will still revolve around four war veterans who are convicted of armed robbery but manage to escape from military prison and become do-gooder mercenaries. The movie is expecting a June 11, 2010 U.S. release.

Hugh Jackman (sadlly) won't be hosting the Oscars 2010

The March 7, 2010, Oscar telecast will mark the 82nd anniversary of Academy Awards, and will be executive produced by Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman.
